Teaching Dodger about horses

[John Murphy]

Murphy woke up early and went on his daily run before returning to his room and taking a shower. After his shower he got dressed before waking Clarke up and walking with her out to the stables. Gavin wanted them to assist him with teaching Dodger how to properly ride a horse. Murphy smiled as he saw Dodger leave his tent to go to the stables with a few friends. "Are you ready to go riding dad? Is mom going to be joining us? I think Mister Bellamy and Miss Lexa are going to help us as well." Dodger said as he smiled up at John and waited for him and his mother. John looked behind him to see Clarke rubbing sleep out of her eyes. "Go on son, we'll catch up." John said as he walked over to Clarke and gave her a kiss before helping her fix her hair. "I know it's early babe, but Dodger really wants you and Lexa to teach him and his friends how to ride the horses. Don't worry, Susan, Nikolai and Gavin will be helping me keep the horses under control. We got the children ponies to start them out. Teach them responsibility." John whispered as he kissed her neck before hearing Bellamy. "Let's go lovebirds." Bellamy said as he escorted Lexa and her horse over to the stables.

John chuckled as he picked up Clarke and ran to the stables. He wanted to watch Dodger pick out a horse. Susan was already awake and grooming her horse Nugget. As Nugget saw Dodger he whinnied happily. "Good morning Dodger. Will your parents be joining us?" Susan asked as she watched Murphy the black stallion wake up before giving a snort and licking Dodger's outstretched hand. "Yes, ma'am." Dodger replied with a smile as Susan saw that he was holding a carrot. She smiled as a delinquent helped Dodger feed Murphy his breakfast.

As John entered the stables he watched Dodger feed Murphy and smiled. After placing Clarke on the ground he saw a few of Dodger's friends following his lead with carrots as they fed the horses with help from Bellamy, Lexa, Gavin, Nikolai, Finn and Jasper. Susan brought out the first pony after locking Nuggets stable. The pony was an Appaloosa and she smiled as Dodger's eyes lit up. "Murphy...Hey Mister Jasper? Is this my dad's horse?" Dodger asked as he watched his dad pick up a couple of brushes and approach him. Susan walked the young Appaloosa over to Dodger as the others brought out the rest of the ponies.

Dodger took the brush from his dad before listening to him. "Alright kids...You must be gentle when brushing the ponies and horses. Think of brushing them like you're holding a baby bird." John said as he helped Dodger put on the brush before showing him how to brush the coat and mane of the horse and pony. As Dodger followed John's instruction he smiled. Susan, Gavin, Nikolai and Lexa helped the other children while Finn, Jasper and Bellamy fed the other horses and mucked out the stables. John looked at Clarke and smiled as he saw her pick up a brush and walk over to her thoroughbred.

Clarke rubbed her eyes as she got up and took a shower and got dressed. she walked with murphy towards the stables. she rolled her eyes as she wondered why they would want to teach the children how to properly ride and take care of the horses this early. she saw how excited dodger was about learning how to ride and care of the horses. she didn't mind the early start though as she got to see and ride her horse luna. she fixed her hair quickly as she saw Murphy from the corner of her eye helping her fix her hair she smirked as she chuckled and said "thanks dear for helping me fix my hair" as she gave John a kiss.

Clarke smiled as Murphy picked her up as they ran towards the stables. She was excited to see Dodger pick out a horse. She walked over to her horse Luna as Dodger fed Murphy his breakfast. She fed Luna her breakfast as she cleaned Luna's stable and helped the others clean the other stables. She saw Dodger take a brush from Murphy as she got a brush for her horse. She looked at Murphy as he showed the children how to properly brush the mane and coat of the horse.
Clarke got to work gently brushing the mane and coat of Luna. She smiled as she said to Luna softly "I'm here nobody but me is going to ride and take care of you." She smiled at Luna before walking over towards Murphy. She smiled at John as she whispered into his ear "hey dear did you need any help with the children?" She looked over at the children as they were brushing their ponies. She walked around to see how each of the kids were doing.

Clarke walked back over to Luna as she looked over at Murphy then at Dodger. The children seemed to have a good time grooming the horses. She wondered when it would be time to teach the children how to ride the horses. She looked at Susan,Nikolai and Gavin to see if it was the right time to bring out the horses and ponies so that the children could learn how to properly ride their ponies.

As Clarke waited for the signal that it was time from Susan,she put her horse's saddle and waited until the children were ready to learn how to put on the saddle of the horse. She slowly removed the saddle of her horse so that she could demonstrate to the children how to put a saddle on the horse. She said to the children "now that you've learned how to properly brush your horse it's time to learn how to properly put on a saddle on your horse." She brought out her horse Luna and demonstrated as well as explained to the children how to put on a saddle before they learned the right way to ride their horse.

As John brushed his black stallion he watched Dodger brush his Appaloosa. "Nice job Dodger. Now listen to your mother and watch what she does." As Dodger looked at his friends he smiled before taking a saddle off of the wall and watching his mother. As his friends did the same thing they listened to Clarke's instructions before saddling his pony. As he strapped the saddle on he then put the bridle into the ponies mouth before adjusting the reign gently. "Easy Snowflake..." Dodger said as he gave her a sugar cube. As he had his dad check the straps and reign he watched as Bellamy and Jasper tied down snowflake before John put the horseshoes on. "Dodger...Make sure your friends don't come near Snowflake..." John said as he hammered the nails into the horse's hooves to keep the horseshoes on. After the last hoof was done, Jasper and Finn released Snowflake and Bellamy helped Dodger get onto his Appaloosa.

John then did the same for the rest of the children after they saddled and bridled their ponies. The ponies were quiet during the tacking and they didn't put up much of a fight. "Why can't all horses be like these ponies?" John asked as he returned to Murphy after placing the hammer, spare nails and spare horseshoes back on the rack near the barn door. He then mounted Murphy and trotted out to the pasture. The children followed him on their ponies as Lexa, Clarke and Susan were waiting for them outside on their horses. Nugget saw Snowflake and whinnied happily. "Easy Nugget...you can play later..." John said as he grabbed the reigns and Susan was bucked off. "OW! Nugget..." Susan cried as she hit the ground hard. She then felt Nugget lick her face and she chuckled as John released the reigns and moved Murphy forward before going into a gallop. He went around a few barrels before watching Nikolai follow him on his horse. Nikolai fired arrows at archery targets off in the distance as the others watched them perform. Murphy whinnied before stopping next to Snowflake.

Clarke watched as Dodger saddled and bridled his pony snowflake. She saddled and bridled her horse Luna as she caught out of the corner of her eye Dodger giving the appaloosa pony a sugar cube and smiled. She brought out her thoroughbred horse and put the horseshoes on her horse. Once she was done putting the horseshoes on her horse she took her horse out of the stable and once outside she was going to mount her horse when she saw Susan hit the ground. She rushed over to Susan and knelt down beside her and asked her "Susan are you alright you hit the ground hard?" She looked at Murphy and asked him "can you hold onto Luna while I check out Susan to see if she's alright."

As she saw that Susan was still conscious she helped Susan up before she returned back to her horse. She got on her horse as the others had done already. She held onto the reigns of her horse and went to join the others. She watched as Nikolai had fired arrows at the archery target and she smiled and said to Nikolai "nice shot Nikolai." She galloped towards Murphy and Snowflake. She looked around to see if it was the right time to teach Dodger and the rest of the children. She looked for the signal of the okay to continue from Susan,John,Lexa and the rest.

As the other children lined up behind Dodger, Lexa paced back and forth on her horse. She asked, "How many of you know how to ride a horse?" As Murphy began to get antsy, John moved him out of the way so the other children could see Lexa. He had Murphy trot over to Susan before galloping off into the forest with Nugget and Susan chasing after them. As he looked back he saw Clarke join in the fun. Jasper and Finn hopped onto their horses before following their lead and whooping and hollering. There were a few nomad grounders in the treeline watching John and the others approach. They readied their weapons and prepared to ambush the group.

Susan watched as Nikolai fired a few more arrows at the nomads before giving the signal to the other hunters. Susan immediately knew they had trouble as she turned sharply to the right and put her horse to the ground. As she did this she watched as Nugget got back up and ran back to the stables. Susan then fired at the nomads as King Roan appeared behind her on his horse. As she went to grab her next arrow she made eye contact with Nikolai and saw him shake his head no. She dropped her hand and strapped her bow to her back before hopping onto the back of Nikolai's horse and wrapping her arms around his waist. Murphy skid to a halt as Nugget fell and John was thrown into a tree. "Aaaagh! Ow!" John cried as he was thrown before hitting the tree. As John hit the tree the Nomad Grounder landed next to him and bowed respectfully.

"My King...Why are you here with the Skaikru?" the grounder asked as John saw that it was an old Azgeda warrior. As he reached for his knife he realized that he had given it to Dodger. "Shit...Well...guess it's option two." he muttered as he took out his baton and started it up. King Roan saw this and held up his hand as John was about to swing at the nomad. "That's not necessary Mr. Murphy...We don't want to cause a scene in front of the children now do we?" Roan said as he looked at the grounder and smiled. As John glared at Roan he saw Indra out of the corner of his eye. "I wasn't going to attack him...just seeing if it still worked." John said as he turned off the baton and pocketed it. He then smirked before slamming his fist into the tree.

Clarke had come to join the fun and rode her horse over towards John. She whispered into John's ear "Let's get Dodger to move over so the other children can see Lexa." She had Luna gallop over towards Jasper and Finn. She looked up and saw a few nomad grounders in the trees and she took her horse and galloped towards John. She let him know about the grounders who were in the tree who were ready to aim at the group within a moments notice. She galloped away so she could get the children to safety near her mother.

She had said for the children to follow her so that she could get them to where they would be safe. Jasper had galloped towards Clarke and asked her if she wanted help getting the children to safety. She nodded and motioned for Jasper and Finn to follow her. She whispered to Jasper saying "let's get the children back towards the stables if we can't get back to the ark." She galloped close to Dodger so that she could keep him safe as well as the other children. She was going with the children when she saw her husband being thrown into the tree.

Clarke yelled to Finn and Jasper to keep going and that she'll be with them in a moment. She had her horse gallop towards John. She got off her horse as she ran over to Murphy. She smiled as she asked "John are you alright?" She held out her hand and helped him up. She saw the nomad grounder and remembered that she had to go and meet up with Jasper and Finn to help get the children to safety. She got back onto her horse and galloped towards Jasper and Finn.

Dodger followed Lexa with the rest of his friends before they were allowed to ride around the stables. "Who knows how to execute a turn on their horse?" Lexa asked the children. "You pull left to go left and right to turn right?" Gretchen asked. Lexa nodded her head in approval before replying, "Correct. How do you stop the horse?" Dodger said, "You pull both reigns towards you gently and say Whoa." Lexa nodded her head again as she saw John hit the tree. "Dodger go help your father." Lexa said as she smiled. Dodger looked over to his parents before turning Snowflake to the left and shaking the reigns. He took off towards his parents and took out the knife his father gave him. As he stopped next to King Roan he tossed the knife at the tree before turning around and riding away. As Dodger returned to Lexa he watched his friends practicing how to turn left, right, stop and go.

John grabbed the knife before pocketing it. He then looked at Roan before saying, "This nomad is an Azgeda spy?" As Roan nodded his head he smiled and replied, "He is my top spy. He is giving me information on the Sankru and Floukru." John nodded his head before getting back on Murphy and riding away with Clarke and the others. Roan spotted Indra and he nodded his head at her before watching Lucas leave.

Clarke galloped towards Jasper as they went over to Murphy. She saw that Dodger was already over with John along with Roan. She figured she would go over there so that she could get Dodger back on his pony so that he could join the other children so that he could learn to ride his pony. She whispered into Dodger's ear "don't worry your father will be okay why don't you just go and join the other children so that you can learn how to ride your pony from Lexa." She gave Dodger a gentle smile as she guided Dodger towards the other children and Lexa.


Once Clarke saw that Dodger was with Lexa and the other children she galloped away so that she could go over to Murphy. She galloped towards a tree where she could see what's going on but she was hidden. She saw John talking to Roan so she knew that he was alright. She peaked her head out a little bit so that she could see what was going on. She thought she would listen a little bit to what Roan and Murphy were talking about. When she thought she had heard enough she rode back over towards Lexa and the other children in case Lexa needed help or if anything else were to happen and Jasper and Finn were to need help getting the children to safety.

"If he does anything to hurt any of the children....I will kill him...Do you understand me?" Murphy said angrily to King Roan. As he began to approach Roan, he was held back by Bellamy. "Cool it bro." Bellamy said as he put Murphy into a headlock and threw him back to the ground. Murphy flipped twice before landing hard on his back. Roan chuckled as he replied, "Don't worry...the children are all safe...I would never break the alliance and execute any of them...Maybe you, but that's just to get closer to your wife." Murphy glared at Roan before standing up and saying, "Get off your horse and fight me once more...You will never lay a hand on my wife until the day I take my last breath." Bellamy stepped in front of Murphy and intervened once more. "Move Bells...This guy has tried taking her from me before...I should have killed him during our last fight." Murphy said as he clenched his hands into fists.

Clarke looked over at Jasper and Finn and whispered to them "follow me I want to find out and know what is going on and being said between Murphy and Roan." She thought it would be a good idea to have Jasper and Finn follow her so that if Roan were to try anything or attempt to take her she would be able to escape with the help of Jasper and Finn if defending herself wasn't an option. Jasper,Finn and her hid behind some tree so they could be hidden but they could hear everything that was going on. She shook her head as she quickly glanced over at Jasper and Finn. She figured that Roan wanted something to do with her but she wasn't quite sure what he wanted from her. She thought maybe she should go somewhere where Roan couldn't get a hold of her but she wanted to see what was going on. She felt Finn's hand on her shoulder as he whispered into her ear "Clarke it's not a good idea to be here long let's go since there is time to leave and take cover,don't worry Murphy and Bellamy will take care of it."

"So you want to show your children how you will die? Pull it together Murphy!" Bellamy cried as he punched him in the face. As Murphy took the hit he stumbled backwards before lunging at Bellamy. As Bellamy was pulled backwards by Roan, Murphy felt the tip of Roan's sword against his throat as he stopped dead in his tracks. "Do you really want to die in front of your wife, friends and the children? If so, I can kill you here and now with one swipe of my blade." Roan said as he set Bellamy on the ground. John spotted Dodger out of the corner of his eye. He was riding his pony with the other children as they listened to Lexa's instructions. "If it means protecting my family...I will do what I must...even if it means giving up my own life to save theirs." Murphy replied as he heard the secret call from Susan and backed up before drawing his own sword. As the blades clashed Murphy watched as Roan jumped off his horse and landed behind him. Roan's blade hovered over Murphy's head. As Roan lifted his blade to strike John they heard Gavin scream, "Noooo! If you do this Roan, I will personally kill you!"

Murphy looked at Bellamy and he saw him pointing his gun at Roan. "Bells....Don't worry....He can't kill me without pissing off the Princess." Murphy said as he threw his sword over his head and blocked the slash. As the clang of the swords connecting were heard, Dodger turned his head and saw his father being attacked. He stopped Snowflake and turned her towards his father. "Dodger! Don't you dare! Your father can handle himself. Don't worry...Bellamy won't let him get hurt..." Lexa said as she stopped her horse in front of Dodger and looked down at him. "Okay everyone! Take your ponies back into the stables and give them some oats and water." Lexa said to the children as they all looked at Dodger. "You heard her! Go!" Dodger yelled angrily as he picked up a lance and put on some armor. After placing armor onto Snowflake he attached a cape to his armor before charging at King Roan. "Leave my father alone!" Dodger yelled as he charged at Roan on Snowflake.

As they were going to go somewhere where Roan couldn't get to her,Clarke stopped and Jasper and Finn looked at each other before saying to Clarke "Clarke if you don't want Roan to get even near you you better come with us. I'm sure everything with John and Bellamy will be fine since they know how to defend themselves." She sighed as she nodded to Jasper and Finn. Jasper rolled his eyes as he whispered to Finn "princess can be stubborn at times." She glared at Jasper and whispered to him "maybe I just want to protect Murphy." Roan,Bellamy and John were out of sight as they galloped off to the forest.

Clarke wondered what was possibly going on with Roan,Bellamy and Murphy. She only thought that nothing good was probably happening. She was grateful that not only had Jasper and Finn came with her but that she was no where that Roan could get to her. She got off her horse as she went over towards a tree. She took out a few sugar cubes and fed them to Luna. She sat down as she rested her head against the tree and smiled slightly at Finn and Jasper.

"I won't let you hurt my father! Let's go Snowflake! Charge!" Dodger yelled as he rode by Clarke wearing his knight outfit and armor. As he approached Roan he pointed his lance at his chest. Before an impact could be made Roan had already brought his weapon down towards Murphy's head. Using his lance, Dodger blocked the attack and got off of Snowflake before he tripped Roan and made him fall. As Roan laid on his back on the ground he coughed before he saw Dodger holding his father's sword.

"Nicely done lad." Roan said as he got up and fought back.

While Dodger fended off Roan for a few minutes, Snowflake returned to the stables as John got back on his feet and caught the sword that Bellamy had tossed him. "Dodger! I've got it from here my son...return to your steed and let me finish him off..." John said as he took his sword from Dodger and winked at him. As Dodger left the battle John continued the fight with King Roan. "I will not let you harm my family!" John yelled as he clashed swords with Roan. They continued to fight each other in the sparring pit until one of them left the ring. Gavin stood nearby with Abby in case either of them made a serious injury to the other.

Clarke looked up as she saw Dodger riding past her wearing medieval knight armor. She scratched her head as she muttered "what the hell is going on and why the fuck is Dodger wearing medieval knight armor?" She thought she was in some sort of hazy dream. She had asked herself is this all some sort of weird hazy dream or was it actually apart of the simulation either way she was confused.

She asked Jasper and Finn "do any of you guys know what is going on and why are people in medieval knight armor? " Jasper and Finn shook their head and shrugged. She thought that maybe if she could figure out what was going on maybe she could figure out a way to end all this madness.

She went over towards Jasper and Finn and whispered to them "wait I have an idea since Dodger and whoever else are wearing medieval knight armor and fighting with swords and such maybe if I can get my hands on a sword maybe I can end all of this." Finn put his hand on Clarke's shoulder as he whispered to her "that is an insane idea do you even know where you are going to find a sword." She sighed as she shrugged as she muttered softly under her breath "there's bound to be a way I could get my hands on a sword I just know it." Jasper gave Clarke a slight smile as he said "I'm not letting you go through with this insane idea there is a good possibility that you'll get injured or even worse killed."

As John kicked Roan backwards before spinning and slashing at him, he saw Clarke out of the corner of his eye. I will protect you... he thought as he brought his other sword down from above. As they continued to spar, Gavin called the children over to watch as well. As the children sat on the ground behind Gavin and Abby they cheered for John. "Come on dad! You can do it!" Dodger yelled as he cheered for his father. As they clashed their swords once more, Roan smirked as he said, "You have a little cheering section now do you? Don't lose focus or you will die..."

Murphy smirked as he was kicked backwards. He used the momentum from the kick to do a backflip as he landed on one of the posts.

As he smiled he said, "You won't get away with killing me in front of the children..." He then watched Nikolai and Susan land on either side of him on posts of their own as the rest of the hunters took their spots on the rest of the posts. As Roan saw that he was surrounded he lowered his swords and bowed to John. John hopped off his post as he too lowered his swords. As he landed on Roan he took out his knife and held it to his throat.
